CareFirst Takes Steps to Aid Members Affected by Hurricane Irma

Baltimore, MD (September 13, 2017) - “CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) announced that it is taking steps to help ensure that its members who live in areas affected by Hurricane Irma have access to necessary care and medication in the coming weeks. CareFirst has more than 26,000 members in Florida, as well as others in states that have been affected by the storm.

CareFirst will take the following steps to help affected members access and use their health care benefits:

  • Waive prescription drug refill requirements and authorize up to a 90-day supply of prescription medications purchased at a network or non-network pharmacy
  • Waive pre-authorization or referral requirements and associated penalties
  • Will not deny covered claims for out-of-network health services for members in designated disaster areas or any area impacted by the storm for the duration of such official emergency declarations

CareFirst members in affected areas may call the customer service number on their membership cards with questions or for additional information.
