At CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst), we believe advancing health equity is essential to improving positive health outcomes across our region. All people—regardless of race or ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability and geographic or financial access—deserve the opportunity to be their healthiest self.
CareFirst proudly supports the $95 million Health Equity Fund, managed by the Greater Washington Community Foundation. This initiative demonstrates the power of collaboration and innovation to address health equity in the District. The Fund supports a sustainable network of people, organizations and projects that promote equitable health outcomes for Black, Brown, Indigenous, People of Color and other marginalized populations in Washington, D.C.
We recognize that 80% of health outcomes are driven by social and environmental factors, and the pandemic only worsened pre-existing, systemic inequities in D.C. communities. That’s why CareFirst is committed to investing in critical areas such as housing, education, nutrition, employment and more—factors that directly influence health and well-being.
Through the Health Equity Fund, CareFirst supports projects and organizations that:
- Support new and established community practices that foster economic mobility
- Advance policy advocacy and systems change to address social and structural drivers of health
- Seed innovative, disruptive projects that model and move toward health equity
Since its inception in 2022, the Fund has awarded $59 million in grants to nonprofits and transformative projects across Washington, D.C.
