At CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst), our mission comes to life when we invest in places that bring people together and expand access to care. One year ago, we made a commitment that went beyond putting our name on a building. When we invested in the Entertainment & Sports Arena—now CareFirst Arena—we set out to create a space that strengthens communities, expands access to resources and drives meaningful change across Washington, D.C.
As we mark our first anniversary, that vision is becoming reality.
Why We Invested
Our decision to invest in CareFirst Arena reflects a simple belief: Communities thrive when health, opportunity and connection are accessible to everyone.
From the start, we envisioned the arena as a hub for economic growth and social impact—a place where residents, families and local partners come together, access vital resources and feel supported. That commitment includes a multi-million-dollar, 10-year investment dedicated to community programming and initiatives that address maternal health, food insecurity, workforce development and other key drivers of health in Wards 7 and 8.
A Year of High-Impact Moments
With partners across the District, CareFirst Arena welcomed tens of thousands of residents for sports, celebrations and community-centered events.
- 107,327 attendees experienced programs, games, celebrations and events
- 7,332 community members engaged in CareFirst Arena community programming
- Recognition as the “Loudest Venue in the WNBA” by Newsweek, reflecting the passion of fans and the spirit of the community
- 1,000+ volunteer hours contributed to events and programming
Spotlight: Bringing Health Directly to the Community
One standout milestone was hosting the inaugural Community Health Fair at CareFirst Arena, designed to bring essential health resources directly to Ward 8 residents and families.
Health Fair Impact Highlights
- 155 community members received onsite services, including biometric screenings and flu shots
- 25+ community partners provided trusted resources, education and support
- 100+ hot meals distributed by UPO
- 6,300 pounds of fresh produce distributed by Dreaming Out Loud
- 47 CareFirst Difference Makers volunteered their time to support the event
The health fair reflected what we envisioned when we invested in CareFirst Arena: a space where access and opportunity meet people where they are.
CareFirst Field: Supporting Health Beyond the Arena
Our commitment to health and well‑being extends beyond the arena through CareFirst Field, a multipurpose outdoor space at the RFK campus created in partnership with Events DC. Designed to encourage movement, play and connection, CareFirst Field provides a welcoming place for neighbors of all ages to be active, gather outdoors, and prioritize wellness in their everyday lives. It reflects our belief that better health starts with access—to safe spaces, fresh air and opportunities to move together.

Looking Ahead: Year Two & Beyond
This first year was just the beginning. With our partners, we will continue expanding community programming, deepening our presence east of the River and delivering initiatives that advance health and strengthen the fabric of D.C. neighborhoods.
We’re proud of what this first year has meant for our neighbors, our partners and our mission. And we’re just getting started.
