CareFirst and the Washington Spirit Host Women's History Month Celebration

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) and the Washington Spirit celebrated Women's History Month with an exciting event at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. The theme "Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations," highlighted the importance of multi-generational dialogue and collaboration among women in all industries.

Courtney Patel, Manager of Strategy & Planning, and Michelle Chau, Business Consultant, co-chairs of CareFirst’s Women's Impact Network Employee Resource Group (WIN ERG) kicked off the event. They emphasized the importance of celebrating women's achievements in the workplace year-round, not just during Women's History Month.

The event featured a panel discussion moderated by Nabila Rahman, Director of Payment Integrity and WIN ERG Strategic Advisor. The panel included inspiring female leaders: Kim Stone, CEO of the Washington Spirit; Angie Gates, President & CEO of Events DC; Tisha Edwards, Secretary of Appointments, Office of the Governor, Maryland; and Katie Cristol, CEO of Tysons Community Alliance. Each panelist shared valuable insights from their personal and professional journeys, highlighting the unique challenges and strengths of different generations of women.

The discussion covered several thought-provoking topics, including:

  1. The significance of a multi-generational workforce and the unique experiences each generation brings
  2. Reflections on the ongoing relevance of women's struggles in male-dominated fields
  3. Learning valuable lessons from younger generations
  4. The rewards and challenges of mentorship and its role in community empowerment

"Life is a contact sport. You can use a lot of the things you see in sports to overcome challenges, like resilience, patience—hard work does pay off and setbacks don't last."

Kim Stone, CEO of the Washington Spirit

"To this day I think it's important that whatever room we're in, especially as women, we have to be strong. Women in leadership is still something we have to support and encourage because it's still not easy. There's a lot more of us seated around the table, but it's not easy, so we're going to pull up a seat for others."

Angie Gates, President & CEO, Events DC

The Women's History Month event celebrated the achievements and potential of women across generations. It provided a platform for insightful dialogue, networking and community building. The discussion reinforced CareFirst's core values and commitment to empowering women and fostering inclusivity. CareFirst is proud to create spaces for these essential discussions and looks forward to more collaboration with partners and the community in the future.
