Eligibility

CareFirst makes contributions, in-cash or in-kind, to:
- Groups that qualify and maintain tax exemption status under section 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code;
- Qualified governmental agencies, health departments, research organizations, or public schools or school systems; or
- Mission-driven initiatives that are approved by the CareFirst, Inc. Board of Directors and consistent with the Company’s conflict of interest policies.
Additionally, to be considered for funding, an organization must:
- Operate in our service area, which comprises Maryland, Washington DC, and Northern Virginia (east and north of Route 123);
- Address the Company’s mission;
- Demonstrate fiscal and administrative stability; and
- Organizations that do not meet the eligibility requirements will not be considered for charitable funding.

It is CareFirst’s policy to decline Contributions that benefit:
- Individuals who request gifts for personal activities (e.g., beauty pageants, school fundraisers, disaster or hardship relief, GoFundMe, etc.) (see insideCareFirst for the employee-funded disaster and hardship relief program, CareFirst Cares Fund);
- Direct scholarships for individuals;
- Parent Teacher Associations, booster clubs, or sports teams (e.g., little leagues, club sports, etc.);
- Alumni or fraternal groups;
- Service clubs (e.g., Kiwanis, Rotary, Lodges, etc.);
- Religious organizations that are denominational or sectarian;
- Political causes, candidates, or campaigns, except for distributions made by the CareFirst Political Action Committee, which are deemed not charitable and out of scope for this policy (see Political Action Committee Policy PPGA 100.03);
- Organizations that exist primarily to influence legislation (e.g. lobbying) or intervene in political campaigns; or
- Institutions that discriminate by age, sex, race, color, sexual orientation, disability, gender identity, or national origin.
Organizations that fall into any of the above categories will not be considered for charitable funding.
