As a not-for-profit insurer, CareFirst is committed to meeting the healthcare needs of our members and individuals and families within our service region who are underinsured or uninsured. CareFirst’s giving strategy targets some of the region’s most vulnerable and underserved populations.
We fund innovative community programs throughout the region that work to:
- Improve healthcare delivery systems
- Promote change on broad health initiatives
- Progress the long-term health of our communities
In 2020, CareFirst invested $27.8M to improve the overall health of the communities in our market areas.
Our recent investments in support of COVID-19 response efforts:
Launched $5M public-private sector philanthropic initiative, “Care, Delivered,” which procured 1.6M UNITS of masks, gowns, gloves and face shields; to date, 1.3M UNITS have been delivered
Invested $12.4M in 157 nonprofit organizations across the Mid-Atlantic, including $4.5M to address health, economic and social needs exacerbated by COVID-19; Round 1 grantees served nearly 1M individuals in 2020
Supported the Baltimore COVID-19 Public-Private Regional Partnership (P3) with JOHNS HOPKINS, UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND MEDICAL SYSTEM and others with call centers and communications, resource dashboards and hotspotting, data integrations, testing capabilities, special populations, care coordination and more
Partnered with the Rockefeller Foundation, Baltimore City, and a broad coalition of funders to launch Baltimore Health Corps to recruit, train and employ more than 300 BALTIMORE CITY RESIDENTS as contact tracers who also make health-related social need referrals
Established the Baltimore COVID-19 Food Stability Fund with 13 local corporations at the Fund for Educational Excellence, resulting in $1.2M in support raised and 368K meals delivered to children, families and seniors
Intensified Social Impact through the Aramark Community Food Relief Program (97,460 meals delivered), as well as associate volunteering, resulting in 2,019 hours virtually and 12,445 hours of skilled volunteering, a contribution valued at $338,504
