CareFirst’s long-term investments support community organizations in the region. These organizations are dedicated to addressing the root causes of poor health and health disparities.
By providing more significant, long-term investments, CareFirst empowers communities to address the SDOH.
The Community Health & Social Impact (CHSI) team leads CareFirst charitable giving requests. All requests receive an executive review. CareFirst makes these investments to advance CHSI areas of focus.

B’More for Healthy Babies
Since 2008, CareFirst has invested almost $12M to support B’More for Healthy Babies (BHB). CareFirst is the first and largest funder of BHB. The program brings together city agencies, healthcare institutions and community-based groups to provide programming such as home visiting services, prenatal and parenting support groups, and fitness classes. Mamatoto Village
Since 2019, CareFirst has invested in providing comprehensive prenatal and perinatal care for African American and Latina women residing in Wards 5, 7 and 8 in Washington, D.C. Programming provides home visiting services to clients from pregnancy to 12-weeks postpartum. The visits assist with life skills, system navigation, and physical, emotional and educational support.
Neighborhood Health
Since 2010, CareFirst has invested more than $1.4M to support Neighborhood Health, a Federally Qualified Health Center, serving low-income and uninsured patients in Northern Virginia. In response to the impact of COVID-19, CareFirst provided $75K to expand testing from three days to five days per week, benefiting Latinx and African immigrants. CareFirst has provided more than 3,500 tests to date.
