2024 marked the twelfth consecutive year CareFirst was named by the Ethisphere Institute as one of the “World’s Most Ethical Companies.” CareFirst was recognized for its corporate culture, business integrity and industry leadership in accountability, transparency and corporate social responsibility.
CareFirst has been nationally recognized as a "Best in Blue" insurer for providing stellar customer service for 26 consecutive years for D.C. Federal Employee Program members and 19 consecutive years for Maryland Federal Employee Program members.
The Federal Employee Program Excellence Awards are presented annually by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) to honor member plans that provide excellent service to federal employees.
The awards focus on the service profile, strategic profile, claims and customer service performance, keeping benefit and administrative costs low, and growing membership.
With more than 9,000 employees and contractors located through our service region, CareFirst has long been committed to promoting a culture of tolerance, acceptance and diversity in the workplace.
The company has earned the following recognitions:
- Named a NOVA Champion for Accountability by the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia and the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce in 2022 for taking steps to create a more diverse and inclusive workforce;
- Earned a top score of 100 percent from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) on the organization’s 2023 Corporate Equality Index (CEI)
For six consecutive years, CareFirst has been named one of America’s Best Employers by Forbes and Statista Inc. The Forbes America’s Best Employers List is created from an independent survey from a vast sample of over 170,000 U.S. employees working for companies employing at least 1,000 people within the U.S.
In 2023, CareFirst was named winner of the 2023 NACD Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Awards by the National Association for Corporate Directors (NACD) in the not-for-profit category. The annual awards recognize boards that have improved their governance and created long-term value for stakeholders by implementing forward-thinking diversity, equity and inclusion practices.
In 2024, CareFirst received the Executive Alliance Honor Roll Award for Women’s Representation. To be recognized as an Honor Roll company, organizations must have at least 30% of their executive leadership and 30% of their board of director seats held by women.
Every year since 2012, CareFirst has been recognized as one of the region’s leading corporate philanthropists by publications including the Baltimore Business Journal and Washington Business Journal.
In 2022, CareFirst employees contributed over 48,000 volunteer hours donating sweat and skills to organizations and community partners including the American Heart Association, Special Olympics Maryland, First Fruits Farm, Capital Area Food Bank and more.
For over 20 years, CareFirst has partnered with United Way and has contributed over $15 million in associate pledges, fundraising, 211 resources and matching grants. The long-standing relationship between CareFirst and United Way has promoted philanthropic giving through workplace campaigns and other programs that have contributed greatly to enhance quality of life and stronger community around the Mid-Atlantic.
In 2022, CareFirst embarked on a collaborative $375,000 three-year partnership with the American Heart Association (AHA) to drive better health outcomes by addressing health inequities. As part of the partnership, CareFirst participated in four regional Heart Walks in Charleston, WV, Cumberland, Greater Maryland and Greater Washington. Nearly 1,500 CareFirst employees and their families came out to walk and raised over $266,000 to benefit research, advocacy and awareness.
CareFirst strives to provide the best service and experience for the more than 3.5 million members across our service region.
In 2024, CareFirst ranked No.2 in the U.S. Health Insurers’ 2024 Customer Experience (CX) Index Rankings, conducted by Forrester Research. CareFirst was the only U.S. health insurer to increase CX rating over the year, outperforming the industry average. This ranking measures the quality of the customer experience among 16 insurers in the United States, specifically looking at ability to provide quality interactions.
