We Stand Together Against Racial Injustice

Our commitment to diversity and inclusion is more important than ever. We continue to take action to support an environment of equity, inclusion and belonging at CareFirst and in the communities we serve.

We stand together with—and for—Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders

While we have surpassed the one-year anniversary of the coronavirus pandemic, a different kind of devastating sickness continues to evolve: Injustice. For the last year, misinformation about the coronavirus has mutated into extraordinary levels of violence and discrimination toward Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). In the wake of this hatred, thousands of innocent lives are left to grapple with tragedy, confusion, pain, sadness, anger and fear.

At CareFirst, we stand with, and in support of, our AAPI associates, members, providers, partners and communities. We’ve committed ourselves to doing everything in our power to unite against the racism that has led to the alarming rise in harassment, violence and deadly attacks.

We ask that you join in our commitment to empathy, understanding and education.

Black Lives Matter—Acknowledging Inequity & Injustice is Not Enough

We have a public health crisis. One that has gripped the hearts, the minds and the day-to-day living reality of far too many for far too long in our country. A devastating sickness of a different kind, one of inequity and injustice—leaving in its wake tragedy, pain, sadness, anger, fear and generations of disturbingly persistent inequality and immense divide. A crisis owned by all, whose consequences disproportionately affect the lives of Black men and women in our communities. This crisis did not start with the most recent lives tragically lost. It has lived in the fabric of our culture and structure of our communities since the dawn of our republic. The lives impacted are innumerable, the depth of its effects incalculable.

We cannot accept this reality. We must demand better of ourselves and of our society. Empathy, compassion and care are perhaps the most important qualities we can nurture within ourselves and others. We must shine the light of these virtues into the darkness of hatred, racism and destruction that tears our communities apart. But acknowledging inequity and injustice is not enough. We must do more. We must participate and be part of change. Each of us individually, and collectively as a society.

At CareFirst, our work together to change this reality has never been more important. We will continue to confront our personal biases and work to address the impact they have on our behaviors, and each other. We will push past fear and discomfort to have the dialogue necessary to better understand and empathize with one another. And we will take action to support an environment of equity, inclusion and belonging at CareFirst and in the communities that we serve.

We stand alongside our Black members, employees, providers, partners and communities—committing ourselves to take action to ensure equity for each and every person in our society. We will listen. We will learn. We will act.
