We believe all people—regardless of race or ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, and geographic or financial access— have the right to be healthy and should have the necessary support and opportunity to achieve their most optimal level of health.
Confronting Racial Health Disparities
In 2021, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) announced a national equity strategy to address the nation’s crisis in racial health disparities. Aligned with BCBSA’s multi-year commitment to address the racial inequities in quality of life, care access and health outcomes, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) is working throughout the Mid-Atlantic to establish meaningful collaboration with and advocate for communities that have been historically marginalized.
Our goals focus on priorities around reducing racial disparities, identifying drivers of inequities and implementing data-driven strategies to advance the health of ALL of our communities.

Addressing Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)
We are closing gaps in how people access and experience healthcare and addressing unmet social needs that impact the health of communities.
CareFirst Focuses on the Following:
- Social and institutional inequalities by advocating for new, improved laws and policies that support the health of historically excluded groups and their communities.
- Individual social needs through partnership with community organizations that support SDOH solutions. Along with strategic investment, CareFirst encourages employees to donate their time and treasure to support these initiatives.
