Scaling Health Equity Locally and Nationally

Becker Healthcare Podcast

As one of the largest not-for-profit healthcare organizations in the country with headquarters in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield has the unique opportunity to drive national change while impacting our surrounding communities to advance affordable, accessible and equitable care for all.

Brian D. Pieninck, President and CEO of CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, joined the Becker's Healthcare Podcast to discuss strategies for addressing social drivers of health and promoting health equity regionally and nationally. As healthcare looks to national solutions for the United States' toughest challenges, Brian notes the importance of not losing sight of individuals at the local level whose unique circumstances and environments may need more than a blanket approach to care.

One of the challenges we've had in healthcare generally is ubiquity. We try to roll out big programs, that are scalable, right? And then we try to ensure that those programs reach the reality of individual lives. And I would say sometimes you can do that and sometimes that's incredibly effective. But sometimes, you've actually got to tune into, adjust for and meet people where they are.
