CareFirst Community Health & Social Impact Efforts

In 2020, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield's (CareFirst) Department of Community Affairs transitioned to Community Health & Social Impact. While CareFirst's community efforts have always focused on public health and how the organization can serve our members and communities, we now have a significant focus on Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) and whole health. SDOH are any factor outside of a doctor's office that impacts an individual's health outcomes, such as access to transportation, healthy food options, education, and more.

Dr. Destiny-Simone Ramjohn, Vice President of Community Health & Social Impact for CareFirst is leading these efforts. Applying an SDOH lens to our work means we can invest in socioeconomic factors, which can lead to better health outcomes in the communities.

“Health begins in our homes, schools, workplaces, neighborhoods and communities. Unfortunately, there are dramatic differences in the places where health begins.”

Possibly the most important commitment we have at CareFirst is that we aim to share information, resources and be present in our relationships with community organizations. No one is better equipped to best serve a community than its own residents–those that know the unique needs and can tailor specific responses to meet them.
