Prioritizing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

DEI Snapshot article

At CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst), our people are our strength. And, when all employees are valued equally, it makes us even stronger.

CareFirst’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) is a key leader in creating a work environment that values, supports and represents a labor force comprised of many experiences, cultures and backgrounds.

More than half of our 6,000 employees represent a racial or ethnic minority, with more than one hundred of those individuals filling senior leadership roles. Nearly seven out of 10 CareFirst employees are female, with more than 150 in senior leadership. Every year, the number of millennials in leadership positions continues to grow; in 2023, more than sixty took on senior leadership jobs.

One important way that CareFirst prioritizes inclusion comes from the efforts of our employee resource groups (ERGs), which create spaces for team members to hear and support each other in various ways. Over 4,000 employees—two-thirds of our workforce—participated in an ERG in 2023.

Whether those groups are shaped around foundations like race and ethnicity, military status, or sexual orientation or based on community service and advocacy, the results are the same: groups of employees come together to connect with each other and foster empathy and understanding. Our ERGs are growing fast, with more than 1,000 new members spanning nine ERGs in 2023.

Outside our walls, in concert with our “One Company, One Team” motto, CareFirst also encourages employees to take action in the communities where they live, learn and play. Our mission to advance better health outcomes through affordable, accessible, equitable and quality healthcare is better accomplished when we embody those communities in our own backgrounds and experiences.

We know that people of all backgrounds can and do thrive at CareFirst, and we are committed to continuing and strengthening our efforts.
