In our ongoing commitment to creating a healthier and more sustainable future, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) has initiated several innovative programs that address the pressing environmental challenges of our time. Understanding that 80% of an individual’s health outcomes are influenced by social and environmental factors, we have dedicated our efforts to reduce emissions, improve food security, enhance water access, support housing stability and promote economic mobility.
Reducing Emissions Through Transportation
The healthcare industry is a significant contributor to global carbon emissions, accounting for two gigatons of carbon dioxide annually, or 4.4% of worldwide net emissions. To mitigate this impact, CareFirst has prioritized initiatives aimed at reducing emissions through various transportation solutions.
Virtual Care
One of the key strategies to address emissions is the expansion of virtual-first care and telehealth programs. By facilitating connections between healthcare professionals and patients without the need for physical travel, we not only increase access to preventive care but also significantly reduce transportation-related emissions. Since its inception in 2021 by Healthworx, CareFirst’s innovation and investment arm, the CloseKnit virtual-first primary care solution has provided high-quality, round-the-clock care to patients across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., reducing the reliance on in-person visits and lowering emissions in the process.
Moreover, partnerships with organizations like Ryse Health and Scene Health have enhanced virtual care for patients with chronic conditions, further decreasing the necessity for physical appointments. Healthworx has also invested in SafeRide Health to ensure non-emergency medical transportation is accessible and efficient.
Transportation Initiatives
CareFirst has implemented programs to reduce work-related travel emissions by supporting hybrid work schedules and advocating for improved public transportation. Our West Baltimore Workforce Development Program exemplifies this effort by providing job training and career opportunities within walking distance for many community members, thereby minimizing travel needs.
We continue to advocate for increased public transportation options for our communities and have signed Baltimore's Transit Future legislation to advocate for a world-class public transportation system for the Baltimore region that creates shared economic prosperity, stewards inclusive growth for all and reduces the impacts of transportation on our environment.
We are also proud to support initiatives like the DC Bike Ride and goDCgo, which promote sustainable transportation and healthier lifestyles. These programs not only reduce traffic and improve air quality, but they also foster a sense of community and well-being.
Addressing Food Insecurity
Climate change has a profound impact on global food supply chains, exacerbating food insecurity in vulnerable regions. CareFirst collaborates with local partners to create community gardens and urban agriculture projects that enhance food sovereignty and reduce chronic health conditions related to poor nutrition.
Our partnerships with organizations like the Washington Nationals, the Baltimore Orioles, CFG Bank Arena and the Delmarva Shorebirds have yielded significant results, providing fresh produce and meals to thousands of individuals in need. These efforts both address immediate food needs and promote sustainable agricultural practices and community resilience.
Improving Water Access
Access to clean water and sanitation is essential for preventing disease and maintaining overall health. In the United States, aging infrastructure and systemic poverty pose significant challenges to water safety, according to Blue Water Baltimore. CareFirst is actively involved in addressing these issues through initiatives such as the Baltimore Regional Water Governance Task Force, in which our Vice President and Chief of Staff, Lester Davis, plays an active role.
Supporting Housing Stability
Housing security is critical for health and well-being, particularly in the face of climate change. CareFirst partners with organizations like Parity Homes and Pathway to Housing DC to provide affordable housing and support services for those experiencing homelessness. These programs offer safe shelter, ensuring holistic health and long-term stability for vulnerable populations.
Promoting Economic Mobility and Inclusion
Economic mobility is a crucial factor in addressing environmental challenges and achieving sustainability. CareFirst supports programs that create well-paying, sustainable careers and provide resources to overcome economic barriers. Our investments in initiatives like the Health Equity Fund and Sustainable DC empower small businesses and entrepreneurs, particularly those who are women-owned or BIPOC, to thrive in the green economy.
While we are proud of the progress made, we recognize that much work remains to create an equitable and sustainable future. CareFirst remains steadfast in our commitment to advancing health and environmental justice for our communities, ensuring a better quality of life for generations to come.
