CareFirst Champions American Rescue Plan

Woman and ChildCareFirst BlueCross BlueShield champions and supports the work of the United States Congress and the President to enact The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. The additional relief for individuals and businesses, funding for state and local governments, and resources for COVID-19 response efforts regarding testing, treatment and vaccination will undoubtedly help to ease the continuing effects of the pandemic on the everyday lives of Americans. It also expands subsidies in the individual marketplaces, increases COBRA subsidies, makes Medicaid enhancements, and extends support for the education system, housing, childcare and food benefits.

CareFirst recognizes that health and well-being begins in our homes, schools, workplaces, and communities. To improve an individual’s whole health, we know it is crucial to address economic, social and environmental conditions. This new law aligns with CareFirst’s mission as a not-for-profit healthcare company to improve the health of the whole person and increase the accessibility, affordability, and quality of healthcare for the individuals, families and communities we serve. As Congress considers additional COVID-19 relief, stabilizing the economy and ensuring access to comprehensive health coverage and services will be key for all. We look forward to continuing to work with our stakeholder partners to protect the health of our members and reach those underserved in our communities.

Since the onset of the pandemic, CareFirst has worked to identify and eliminate barriers to care, including covering all authorized COVID-19 vaccines and administration costs at zero cost-share for all of our members. CareFirst recognizes that vaccination efforts are a shared responsibility where all stakeholders must dedicate time, resources and communications. To demonstrate our commitment, CareFirst launched the “Better Together” campaign aimed at urging the public to get the vaccine when eligible and able so that we achieve herd immunity and leave COVID behind.

As a healthcare insurer, leading employer and community champion, CareFirst plays an important role in continuing to provide education and resources. It is equally important to recognize that there is strength in numbers. The best way for all of us to get better, is to do it together. We must continue to combine our efforts locally, regionally and nationally to help put an end to this pandemic.
